Review - The Mikado (from Southern Daily Echo, 02/05/09)

Cleverly updated, with some original concepts, we are transported to The World Trade Fair, presider over by Michio Kato (Clive Hilton) and served by his hapless employees, Ko-Ko (Adrian Hickford), Pooh-Bah (Tony Blackshaw) and Pish-Tush (Rick Bremner).

The trio played well against each other, contrasting in their characters and providing chaos and comedy as Ko-Ko is forced to give up the beautiful Yum-Yum (Sophie Pentecost) to Nanki-Poo (Dan Hickson) and ends up with Katisha (Penny Bullough), who showed great depth of character and stage presence.

The singing was of very high standard, with no weak links and the witty word adaptations were clearly audible through-out.

The choreography (Suzanne Hall and Louise Hodson) was also excellent but I would have liked to have seen more, especially for the ensemble and the show needed to move more quickly. Some nice directorial touches and the high quality made it a night to remember.
