What the Papers Said...
Press Release - 20-04-2010
THE SHOW MUST GO ON.........
Life imitated art towards the end of the run of Winchester Operatic Society's latest success, 42nd Street! The show's familiar storyline is that of a chorus girl who steps up to replace the leading lady who has broken her ankle. Towards the end of the WOS run, something very similar happened in reality. Georgina Bottriell, playing the key role of Dorothy Brock, was rushed into hospital early on the Friday morning.
Katie Hickson stepped valiantly up from the minor role of chorus member Anytime Annie, to take over the part of Dorothy. With just seven hours to learn the parts, former WOS Chairman Anne Croudass took over Katie's role and both Katie and Anne did a fantastic job.
Current WOS Co-Chairmen, Gill Russell and Vernon Tottle, said: “We are incredibly proud of the way in which the whole cast and crew rallied round and for all the effort they put in to preparing for the changes. The performances continued without a hitch – a highly professional achievement – we are very grateful indeed to our production team and Director, Vara Williams”. Georgina was able to return for the final performance, ending a triumphant, if somewhat at times anxious week for WOS!
Preparations are due to start shortly for the autumn show, a traditional production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Yeomen of the Guard at the Theatre Royal from 9-13 November. There will be an information evening on Monday 24 May at Western School, Browning Drive at 7:45pm – full details on the WOS website: www.winchester-operatic.org.uk.
