What the Papers Said...

Press Release - 25-03-2010

Winchester Operatic Society's spring show is the Broadway classic musical 42nd Street – coming to the Theatre Royal, Winchester from Tuesday 13 April to Saturday 17 April.  Performances start at 7:30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2:30pm.

Will stage-door newcomer Peggy Sawyer get into the chorus?  Will one-time star Dorothy Brock survive her extra-marital affair and make it to opening night?  What will director Julian Marsh do when his leading lady breaks her ankle?  Does being in the right place at the right time really work?

Joining the cast as Peggy, is WOS newcomer Alexandra Boughton.  She is no stranger to 42nd Street and Peggy Sawyer, having first played the part five years ago.  A drama graduate of Bath Spa University, Alexandra’s credits include roles in Fiddler on the Roof, Blood Brothers and Cabaret.

Peter Barber plays Julian – his second appearance with WOS, having made his debut as Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana last November. Peter has sung a wide variety of roles in opera, oratorio, musicals and pantomime ranging from the title role in the Flying Dutchman to an Ugly Sister in Cinderella! For some years has been more used to appearing behind the scenes than treading the boards on stage at Theatre Royal Winchester, where he is Deputy Chair of the theatre's Board of Trustees.

Georgina Bottriell also makes her second WOS appearance – as Dorothy, the fading star.  She appeared as Angelina, in Trial by Jury, last November.  Having moved from Salisbury last year where she performed with Salisbury Operatic Society, her previous experience includes the Handel operas Semele and Acis and Galatea.

42nd Street is a celebration of Broadway and the people involved in shows. Musical toe-tapping hits include You're Getting to Be a Habit with Me,  We're In the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and the title number Forty-Second Street.

Tickets are on sale from the Theatre Royal Box Office on: 01962 840440 or www.theatre-royal-winchester.co.uk.
